The creators of Babylon Berlin will arrive at LIFT festival in October

LIFT, organized for the second time in October 2019, will fill the Merikaapelihalli (Sea Cable Hall) with more than sixty performances engaging us to make sense of various phenomena within media, culture and art, challenging our time while looking forward into the future.

LIFT captures the emotional climate of our time with Henk Handloegten, the
screenwriter of the TV series Babylon Berlin. The award-winning director reveals how to create a series that delves deep into the depths and ideology of our time. Babylon Berlin is not just a historical reconstruction – it takes us into the emotional climate of the 1920s. In her panel discussion, the screenwriter Anna Brotkin walks us through the world of new and engaging comedy writers. She will focus in particular on feminist comedy and new forms of comedy.

LIFT challenges us to think. The internationally renowned techno-sociologist Zeynep Tufekci will tell us about global technology giants using huge amounts of personal data for advertising purposes, while using algorithms to manage our access to political and social information. Cultural Data Scientist Vishal Kumar has used data to study how culture contributes to the price formation of accommodation services and how willing Londoners are to pay for public art. LIFT challenges us to think about new and fairer ways to use data.

LIFT makes art, science, technology and future shake hands. Climate channel artists challenge each other and those involved in the event. A contemporary art group will build new works of art on recycled material throughout the event. Hanna Haaslahti will offer us a new kind of VR experience and ask into what kind of realities technology can throw us.

LIFT reveals what lies behind various phenomena. How Fotografiska found its way to Tallinn and what Oodi did to the concept of library? Cultural economist Erika Rushton will tell us how people in Liverpool embraced a cultural change.

LIFT is about surprises. At LIFT, we will dance together with a robot, experience how Heikki Kossi creates entire sound worlds and hear Kimmo Pohjonen create images with his accordion. Artists will lead the way to the new world that is only just breaking out.

LIFT believes that the world can and must change. The young people of the Gutsy Go project are armed with mobile phones and swarm intelligence. Every day, they develop solutions to our day-to-day and global problems that can be copied around the world. Photo journalist Touko Hujanen will tell us why he wanted to bring uncertainty and surprise back to his work and went out for a walk. The walking tour resulted in a newspaper work of art that became a lifestyle as well as a celebration to which everyone is invited.

- LIFT 2019 focuses on the significant phenomena of our conflicting times and the big issues that shake the Western culture, says Ritva Leino, Chief Curator of LIFT.

LIFT is an exciting media, arts and cultural event at Cable Factory where everyone interested in culture, art and media is welcome. The event is organized by Yleisradio and Kiinteistö Oy Kaapelitalo. Partners are Sun Effects, TAKU ry, Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Kulta ry, Journalismin akatemia, Yle LAb and Rogers Studio Oy.

Last year, LIFT was sold out so make sure to sign up for the event!
